“But I won’t ever use this in real life…”

Sure, there’s plenty in our math, science, and history curriculums — and on our standardized tests — that may not directly impact a student’s future career. But here’s the thing: learning something challenging strengthens the brain “muscles,” just as scales improve the singer’s range or thousands of leg lifts enhance the dancer’s technique. Understanding how to take tests improves pattern recognition in general, and helps a student grasp how to meet the demands of someone else’s rules – certainly a skill that will be useful with future clients and bosses.

Our Approach

At Tutoring Works, we adjust our communication, techniques, and pace according to each student’s needs, and help clients with the organizational skills and study habits that will serve them for the rest of their lives. Of course, we are interested in helping to improve grades, but we are also just as dedicated to teaching meta-learning — in other words, helping a student learn how to learn.

Meet Deana Barone

I believe that EVERYBODY can learn, though it may take some people a little more time to get to where they want to go…

I believe that books and math and even standardized tests are fun, (though I get that many other people don’t agree with me on that point!)…

I believe that exercising and challenging the intellect is one of the reasons that humans were given such incredible brains — and it’s part of our collective life purpose to open, grow and transform our thought processes….

I grew up watching my parents teach: my mother, a special education teacher and diagnostician always kept her calm with younger kids, and my father, a university professor, won award after award for his charismatic communication. I was impressed, emboldened and energized by what I saw them do, and I often thought, “Boy, I’d love to teach, and it would be so cool to do it one-on-one.” Fast forward to my arrival in Los Angeles with an optioned screenplay, a bourgeoning acting career, and a desire to never have a “day job,” but rather, to create another, equally fulfilling path that utilized my academic abilities and where I could see the direct effects of my labor and love. I had a number of independent contractors working with me as tutors in past years, but because I’ve branched out as a creative coach, acting coach, web editor, director and storyteller/performance artist (see my performance art and my coaching websites), I keep only a small roster of tutoring clients now.
